What exactly do I get in this kit?
You get 2 or 4 cradled wood panels. The face is 1/8″ thick birch board joined to a 5/8″ solid wood cradle, for a total depth of 3/4″. They arrive unfinished and ready to prep.
Are these panels pre-primed or gessoed?
No — they are unfinished, so you prime them yourself. For acrylic and oil we recommend a thin sealer coat first (an acrylic medium or PVA size), then 2–3 thin coats of gesso, sanding lightly with 220-grit between coats.
What mediums can I use on these panels?
With proper priming: acrylic, oil, gouache, tempera, encaustic, mixed media, collage and photo transfer. They are also widely used for dry mounting prints, resin work, wood burning and laser engraving or cutting.
Is the wood grain visible?
Yes, the face is real birch, so the natural grain shows on every panel and each one is a little unique.
Is this solid birch or MDF / plywood?
The painting surface is real birch on a solid wood cradle — not MDF and not a canvas board. Birch is a stable hardwood that resists flexing, which is exactly why it’s the standard choice for cradled panels.
